Lead Magnets in the Age of AI

Are they dead yet?

For years, brands have relied on the lead magnet – the free eBooks, templates and webinars offered in exchange for contact details. For some, it’s the cornerstone of their B2B lead generation strategy.

Where do you start with lead generation?

A really good question. If there are no leads, there’s no business and there’s no bottom line.

With lead magnets, the premise is  simple: provide value upfront to capture leads and nurture them into clients. Looks awesome in practice.

Lead Magnet Reality Check

But in today’s landscape, where AI can generate super stylish and polished content in minutes, we’ve got to question whether this approach still delivers genuine value.

As a marketing consultant working with startups and SMEs across the UK, I’ve observed a fundamental shift.

Lead magnets have served as effective tools for demonstrating expertise and building trust for a long time.

However, the explosion in AI-generated content means that they now risk becoming just another form of content pollution.

This isn’t good news for the businesses that have been authentically sharing their business nous with others to demonstrate their credentials.

What’s the problem here, though?

It’s the sheer accessibility of content. Anyone can produce a ‘comprehensive guide’ using ChatGPT in under an hour. It diminishes the quality and authenticity of the offer.

This proliferation of AI-generated content creates several challenges for businesses.

Firstly, it leads to audience fatigue. Prospects are bombarded with near-identical ‘gated’ content, making it harder for any single offering to stand out.

Secondly, and more critically, these generic resources often fail to address the specific pain points that potential clients actually face.

Will a templated eBook about brand strategy really help a business owner that’s wondering why their current messaging isn’t resonating?

Hmmm, maybe – but probably not.

Key Marketing Touchpoints

And here is the rub…

As well as counting the number of touchpoints that any brand has with their audience, you have to provide the quality.

The deeper problem lies in what lead magnets cannot provide: genuine human insight and tailored advice.

AI can mimic expertise at scale, but it lacks the nuanced understanding that comes from real-world experience, whether that’s guiding a tech startup through rebranding or helping a professional services firm refine its market positioning.

For businesses serious about lead generation, I’m advocating a  shift in focus from quantity to quality of engagement.

Instead of offering another downloadable template, consider more personalised approaches.

And this is what I’m suggesting to the brands and businesses that we strategise and plan for.

Replacing volumous lead magnets with marketing clinics creates opportunities for meaningful dialogue that no AI-generated resource can match.

At Who Why How, we follow our own advice and we’re offering free Discovery Calls.

Strictly speaking, these calls could be call lead magnets. Within the business, we just think of them as a chance to meet new people.

Do lead magnets have a place in modern marketing?

Maybe – when used strategically, as part of a broader nurturing campaign. Or if you’ve got some gloriously sticky content, share, share, share – but it’s got to be the good stuff!

As a standalone tactic, the lead magent is on the wane.

Next steps…

The most successful businesses I work with understand that, in an age of content saturation, real relationships and tailored advice will always outperform mass-produced resources.
